considering job as a SalesLogix Developer (need advice)

| I'm considering a job as a SalesLogix developer. I'm interested in any good or bad aspects of developing in Sales Logix. It's my understanding that the coding is done in Cypress Enabled Basic. My background is SQL Server and VB6 (mostly maintenance). I'm not sure if it is a good career move or not. Any insight would be greatly appreciated !! |

Hi Thomas,
I agree with Mike jump in, opportunity to branch out from your comfort zone will cause the gitters but it will show your willingness to learn new skills and applications. I noticed that you work for Avectra which sells a CRM system of sorts and it is written in .Net so many of the skills you have will transfer to SLX development and of course you have sites like this that provide a wealth of information.
If the job is for a corp. the downside is the possiblity of application lock, that is you will get so involved in SLX that if your company moves to something else you have nothing else to fall back on, always learn other apps that your company also supports and develops. If the job you are looking at is for a Business Partner you will work a lot of hours since time is money and you will have to deal with sales promising stuff you then have to build .

| Thank you for your comments. Our company uses a pre .net version of Avectra and that's why I said I work for them. The job I'm looking at is for a re-seller of SalesLogix and I would be working for them doing development work mostly at their office and not at a business partner. However, dealing with project plans constantly I could see working many hours especially at first until I get proficient with the software. My main concern is if working in SalesLogix will be a good technological career move. I won't be doing .net development and I'm trying to figure out if I am going to be painting myself into a corner. Will working in this leave me marketable at the end of the day? |

Thank you. The job I'm considering is actually a 12% pay cut but I'm trying to look at the big picture and if it
makes me more skillful and more marketable in the future, I'm more apt to take the job. I'm not sold that VBtype script and some ADO database access will accomplish that, although it's more programming than I do now. If SalesLogix .net was right around the corner I would be more compelled to think this is a good career move. |

As long as it is development you should be still using many of the same skills as traditional development i.e. requirements gathering and analysis, business process and flowing of that process, detailed designing and building of software.
Also since the release of SLX 7.0 you have the advantage of using .Net extensions so you will still be developing (at times, there is a great thread running right now on when to use .net development by the way) in .net as well as other languages to integrate with other systems.
And like I said it is incumbent on you to learn all the other (or as many of) applications that you company sells, supports and develops.

Consider all things equal when you decide where you want to go. Truthfully SalesLogix can be both fun and very agrevating in the same day. If your goal is to be an applications developer creating standalone solutions then a stint in development in SalesLogix can give you some well rounded knowledge in a very well crafted platform. I think you eluded that you will mostly be working on the internal system, you may not be exposed to **ALL** or even many of the aspects of the SLX Platform. Developing in the platform is not too hard, the real problem is knowing all of the gotchas/idiosyncracies and to get to that level is not weeks or months. It takes a long time and lots of real world experience. As Mike mentioned 7.2 web client has been re-architected from the ground up utilizing .net and allowing for customizations to be done in c# or vb.net. The mobile product is also .net or java. Given this it is competely possible to get good exposure to all of the tools and use external languages that are considered more main stream. If you have any concern about application lockin I would speak with your potential employer and ask about the direction of the busines in regards to SalesLogix. I.E. are they web, are they going to mobilize ...
