Unable to locate file when report checked out
Posted: 01 Oct 07 9:52 AM

Hi there,
I remotely support a site, so I log in using VPN and then make remote desktop connections to the application server. I checked out a report to work on it, and then lost the Remote Desktop connection. When re-connecting, I could not pick up my initial connection, and had to make a new connection. On the new connection, it still showed that the report was checked out. I could continue working, and eventually checked in the report, and everything worked fine. Later on when I connected to the application server again, I was able to pick up my initial connection. On there it still showed that my report was checked out. Obviously I could not check it back in, because the checked out file no longer existed. So I closed Architect in the hope that it would show the report as checked in the next time. No such luck, however. Also, whenever I open architecht now, it shows that that report is checked out. I cannot check it out again, and also cannot check in. Cannot launch Crystal with the report. Somehow I need to tell SLX that this report is no longer checked out. What is the best way to do this?
Thanks

Ina,
Interesting situation. I'm not sure what might resolve the issue. I have a feeling there is something going on in the database for the report. Something relative to the versioning between the report you were first working on and the second one that was finished and checked in.
Before I go on, I do have a suggestion on what to do next time you are abruptly disconnected from a Remote Desktop session. What I've found you have to do in these cases is to log onto another box via Remote Desktop. From All Programs | Administrative Tools select Terminal Services Manager. From this utility you can force a disconnect on the Remote Desktop session that abruptly ended. Under "All Listed Server" right-click the domain name where the computer in question is located. From the pop-up menu select "Connect to Computer..." Enter the name of the computer and press enter.
The manager will connect to the computer and on the right under the Users tab show the list of users currently connected. Find your user name, right-click and select "Disconnect" from the pop-up menu. After a few seconds the session should show "Disconnected." When it does, you can log in to that session again. Hope that helps for next time if it happens.
Back to your report check out... I have only one suggestion. Not sure if it'll work but its worth a try. Have you tried 'Unlock"ing the report? When you are in the Report Manager, right-click the report and select Unlock from the pop-up menu. Also try to lock the report then unlock it. Then try launching Crystal with out checking out the report. When you click 'Launch Crystal" form the pop-up menu it automatically check's out the report.
Hopefully one of those suggestions will help. One thing I am afraid of is that you will be able to access the report again, but it'll be the version you had from your initial session.
Good luck! John G. |

This may not be a very useful comment, but as a personal standard, I always copy (ie: "Save As") any report I've checked out of Slx as soon as I open the Crystal Designer. I do this primarily to keep versions for a report because SalesLogix doesn't do this for report 'plugins'. Then if I run into a situation like you did, I can simply delete the report and enter it again. |

Hi John
Thanks very much for the suggestions. I will certainly try that. Just busy on another project at the moment and will get back to this one. Luckily I do normally do a "Save as" as soon as I check out the report, so worst case I will be able to delete and re-create. But it is also useful to see what else may be available if the backup option wasn't available.
I especially like your suggestions on the Remote Desktop issues, as obviously this will help me in non-SLX related cases as well.
Regards

Hi Robert,
Thanks - I do that as well. I have burnt my fingers a few times with reports becoming corrupt while I was working on them, or not working after I checked them back in even though it worked in Crystal!
Good to hear everyone's thoughts
Regard
