Specify crystal report datasource external to the rpt file?

I'd like to specify my datasources in an external file and then reference them by name in my crystal reports. This way I can move my reports from developement to test and then to production without having to re-open the report in the crystal designer for each move to switch the datasource. I am not doing anything fancy - just using the slx oledb provider. Can this be done?
thanks, Ken |

I think this is a misunderstanding on my part. When I open a rpt file in Crystal Reports XI R2, and then select Database - Set Datasource Location, I can see that the database connection info is saved in the report. I was assuming that this connection info would be used when the report runs within SLX. However, after doing some experimenting, it appears that when the report runs in SLX, the database connection info stored in the report is ignored and the report is run using the SLX database connection from the SLX server running the report.
But if this is correct, it seems to me you would run into problems if you also wanted to reference an external datasource? Or maybe the mechanism is smart enough to ignore connections not based on the SLX OLEDB provider - but then what if you wanted to report against two different SLX databases?

OK.
Not something I have tried, but I believe that is a limitation of Crystal reports in SLX - only one datasource and that datasource is SLX. If you have 10 mins to spare, you could easily verify that by adding something out of Access, for example, and testing.
